You are an LPN hired to work part-time as a nursing supervisor. Your duties include supervising and supporting community health workers, reviewing care plans, educating and training staff, and supporting a safety culture. You are not providing hands-on care. What category of registration must you hold to work in this role?

A: Practising registration

Correct! An LPN must hold practising registration to practise as an LPN in any setting or nursing domain (clinical practice, administration, education or research), and use the title Licensed Practical Nurse, Practical Nurse, Nurse or LPN. See the Use of LPN Title Practice Standard for more information.

B: Non-practising registration

That’s not correct. A non-practising LPN cannot work, volunteer or practise as an LPN in any setting or nursing domain (clinical practice, administration, education or research). See the Use of LPN Title Practice Standard for more information.

C: No registration

That’s not correct. If you don't maintain practising registration, you cannot practise or volunteer as an LPN in any setting or nursing domain (clinical practice, administration, education or research). See the Use of LPN Title Practice Standard for more information.

D: Temporary registration

That’s not correct. If the registrar declares an emergency situation and the public needs the services of additional LPNs, CLPNBC may grant temporary registration. See the Use of LPN Title Practice Standard for more information.

An individual who is unregistered, retired or non-practising and does not renew registration cannot use the title LPN. The individual cannot practise as an LPN in clinical practice, education, administration or research. Individuals who practise without practising registration are in breach of the Health Professions Act and may be subject to discipline.

See the registration and renewal tab of the CLPNBC website for more information.
