Practice Hours

Every year Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) demonstrate they have met their Quality Assurance requirements for currency in practice. LPNs must work a minimum of 1,125 practice hours within the five-year period immediately preceding each registration renewal.

When determining whether your work is considered Licensed Practical Nursing, consider the following:

  • Did you hold practising registration as an LPN during the time the hours were acquired?
  • Did the position you hold require you to have practising registraion as an LPN?
  • Did your job involve providing services within the definition of LPN practice?
  • Did you practice according to the CLPNBC Standards of Practice?

Review information on what practice hours you can and cannot count here.

If you don’t have enough hours, you have options. Find out more about the Annual Renewal requirements.

PCR Case Study:

This month, our Conduct Case Study focuses on dishonest behaviour in LPN applicants. For example, did you know that dishonesty in a school setting can affect you even after you have graduated?

**Conduct case studies are fictional and are intended only to demonstrate the potential for dishonest behaviour in nursing.**

Vera is a recent graduate of a Practical Nursing program. Vera has a passion for helping people and can’t wait to become a nurse, but, she struggled with the theoretical components of the program. In her second semester, while stressing about an upcoming exam and the risk of not graduating, Vera decided she would do what ever she could to ensure she passed the exam. During the test, Vera copied off a student sitting next to her, but was caught by the instructor before the exam was done. Vera was eventually afforded an opportunity to rewrite the test and she passed; however, the cheating episode stayed on her record and was reported to CLPNBC by the school when she applied for registration.

How does this affect
Vera’s LPN registration?
