Scope of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses

New Standards, Limits & Conditions

CLPNBC’s Scope of Practice: Standards, Limits & Condition has been revised to align with the Nurses (Licensed Practical) Regulation. This document takes effect June 5, 2016; however, implementation of new standards, limits and conditions will be gradual.

  • LPN practice will not change until employers have appropriate policies in place
  • Employers will need time to determine what changes will take place in their organizations and when those changes will happen
  • CLPNBC will continue to work closely with LPNs, employers and others about how to apply the standards, limits and conditions in the workplace

Pyramid - Controls of LPN Practice

You are an LPN working on an acute surgical ward. A physician orders an IV for a client being prepared for emergency surgery. You have completed additional education to start IVs. Can you start the IV?

Select an option:

  1. Yes, if I have successfully started 10 IVs.

  2. I can only start an IV on a client who is going for an elective procedure.

  3. Yes, if my employer policy supports LPNs to start IVs.

  4. I can only start IVs if I had IV education in my entry-level PN education program.

Are you curious about Jurisprudence?

Day 1: JP education video

CLPNBC’s Jurisprudence education is now available online to everyone! Even if you aren’t selected to complete the Jurisprudence exam this year, you can try out this new resource. Jurisprudence education helps LPNs understand and apply CLPNBC Standards of Practice.

The education takes you through six days in the life of an LPN. Each day, you encounter a variety of practice settings, clients, colleagues and scenarios. Throughout the day, you answer multiple choice questions. If you need help, you can watch the expert videos and explore links to resources provided to you. It’s open book – just like the exam!
