Assessment Tools
The CLPNBC has produced a self-assessment workbook that will help LPNs determine their current level of competence related to patient assessment.
The 75-page workbook is divided into three sections: a pre-review exercise which enables you to figure out your current competency level; an overview of patient assessment including a summary of body systems and system assessment; and a post-review exercise to determine your knowledge of patient assessment.
Pharmacology and Medication Administration Self-Assessment Process
This resource is a self-assessment tool. It is used by a registrant to determine their competencies, their learning needs, to add to their professional portfolio evidence, and to prepare to successfully meet the competency requirements for licensure in 2007.
Patient Assessment: Self Assessment Tool
This resource is also a self-assessment tool. Its focus is on the competency of assessment. This Self-Assessment Tool is divided into three sections. Section I (Pre-Review Exercise). Section II (Overview: Patient Assessment, Body Systems and System Assessment). Section III (Post Review Exercise). The Patient Assessment Tool offers the registrant an opportunity to determine their competency level regarding Patient Assessment.

Bylaws
The Board is responsible to government, registrants and society. Of these, society is pre-dominant. Society acts through its elected representatives in the provincial government. It is government that gives the College its mandate and its power through the Health Professions Act. This legislation, in effect, says: the College is responsible for superintending the practice of nursing so that the people of the province receive safe and appropriate nursing care. In order to be able to exercise this responsibility the College is also given certain legal powers including, the authority to: register LPNs and collect fees; set and maintain standards of nursing practice; approve basic nursing education programs; and to intervene when individual nurses behave in a way that threatens people's well-being.
The College interprets these powers through the College's bylaws, but even these must be approved by government before they take effect. The act and bylaws enable the College to engage in activities that go beyond what is required by government ,providing these activities are consistent with the intentions of the act.
The Bylaws provide staff, the Board, and Registrants with clear statements about the responsibilities, accountabilities, and processes the College and its registrants must adhere to.

Companion Guide
Code of Ethics for LPNs: Companion Guide
The Code defines the ethical principles and values central to nursing practice. A Licensed Practical Nurse is bound by a Code of Ethics to adhere to moral norms of conduct and to assume an ethical and professional commitment primarily to the health and well-being of clients and families but also to colleagues, employers and themselves. The Code also serves as an ethical basis from which to advocate for quality practice environments with the potential to impact delivery of safe, competent and ethical nursing care.

Standards of Practice
Professional Standards of Practice for Licensed Practical Nurses in British Columbia (2010)
LPNs are one category of nursing in B.C. As professional nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses adhere to the Standards of Practice for the profession. This document outlines three professional standards for LPNs.
The CLPNBC defines Standards of Practice as the minimum expected levels of practitioner behaviour and practice, against which actual practitioner behaviour and practice is measured. The Standards have been organized into sections that reflect the framework of the Entry-Level Competencies for Licensed Practical Nurses' Professional Practice, as follows:
Foundations of Practice; Collaborative Practice; Professional, Ethical, Legal. The order of the competency sections is not an indication of priority or importance and while the competencies what the LPN does, the Standards describe how these competencies are demonstrated. |
